The Science of Peace: Why Massage Doesn't Need to Hurt Part 3

This is the third post in a four-part blog series on understanding effective massage.

There is a lot of confusion about what makes massage effective. Many people assume that deeper pressure and more pain must mean better results. This series explores a different perspective: how massage works best when it works with the body instead of against it. We'll look at what "deep tissue" actually means, why slow is better, how fascia responds to massage, and why the nervous system plays such an important role in releasing tension.


Understanding these ideas can help you get more out of your massage sessions...and may even change the way you think about bodywork altogether.


Fascia is the body’s connective tissue network.

It surrounds and supports muscles, bones, nerves, and organs. Instead of separate muscles working independently, fascia connects everything together in a continuous web.


Think of fascia as a three-dimensional web

  • It helps the body moves smoothly. Healthy fascia is smooth, hydrated, and flexible, allowing muscles and tissues to glide past each other as you move. This is what allows you to bend, reach, walk, and rotate comfortably.

  • It helps distribute force and support the body. Instead of one muscle doing all the work alone, the fascial network spreads load across multiple tissues, allowing the body to move more efficiently and maintain stability.

  • Fascia also contains many sensory nerve endings. These help the body detect pressure, movement, and position.


Issues within Fascia

When facia becomes tight or restricted from injury, repetitive movements, stress or l ong periods in one position, movement can start to feel still or limited. Sometimes discomfort shows up away from the original restriction because fascia connects different areas of the body. Or sometimes, when parts of the fascial system become tight or stuck together, it can create extra strain in nearby muscles and joints. Restrictions can feel like aching, pulling, stiffness, or tenderness.


Why fascia prefers slow work

Fascia tends to respond best to slow, sustained pressure.

Quick or aggressive techniques may slide over the tissue, but slower pressure allows the therapist to engage the fascial layers more effectively.


Over time this can help:

  • Reduce fascial restrictions

  • Improve movement

  • Decrease pulling or stiffness

  • Support better circulation in tissues


This is one reason why many myofascial techniques involve holding pressure in one place for a short time instead of constantly moving.


In summary, fascia is a part of the body's connective web, linking muscles and tissues into one continuous system. It can become restricted in areas, causing discomfort in areas away from the restricktion or in nearby muscles and joints. Slow, sustained work allows fascia time to soften and stretch, slowly working through those restrictions to bring relief.
