The Deep Sigh

There’s a moment that happens in many massage sessions that I’ve come to recognize.
A deep sigh.
Not the kind you take on purpose. The kind that seems to come from somewhere deeper. A breath that arrives when the body finally realizes it doesn’t have to hold everything quite so tightly.
That sigh often signals a shift.
The nervous system settles. Guarding softens. Muscles stop bracing. The body begins to trust the moment.
For me, that’s one of the most beautiful parts of a session.
From there, the work often feels different. Not because the techniques change, but because the body is more open to receiving them. Instead of resisting, it begins to cooperate. Instead of protecting, it begins to release.
Many times, this happens during that in-between space…that place where you’re not quite asleep, but not fully focused on the outside world either. Thoughts drift. Awareness softens. Time gets a little fuzzy.
And then… the sigh.
Nothing is wrong with talking during a massage. Conversation can be meaningful, comforting, and even part of the healing process. Some clients relax best by chatting, and that’s perfectly okay.
But sometimes silence creates room for something else.
When the mind gets a chance to quiet down, even briefly, the body often follows. The to-do lists fade. The problem-solving pauses. The nervous system gets a break from being “on.”
That’s when the magic tends to happen.
Not because silence itself is magical, but because it gives the body an opportunity to let go.
So if you ever find yourself drifting during a session…that floaty, peaceful, in-between feeling where you’re not sure if you’re awake or asleep…know that it’s okay to be there.
Your body might just be taking a deep breath and saying,
“I’m safe now. I can rest.” 🩵🌿
Progress at the pace of peace.
