“I just need someone to loosen me up.”


It’s one of the most common things I hear in the treatment room.


“My shoulders are always tight.”


“My neck never relaxes.”


“My hips always feel stiff.”


Most of us have described our bodies this way at some point. If something feels tight, it seems logical to assume it simply needs to be loosened.


But what if that sensation is only part of the story? What if “tight” isn’t one thing at all? What if it’s your body’s way of responding to the demands of everyday life?


What Does “Tight” Actually Mean?

One of the most interesting things about the human body is that the sensation of tightness doesn’t always mean the same thing.


“Tight” isn’t a diagnosis. It’s a description of how something feels. That feeling may be influenced by several different systems working together.


Sometimes a muscle is working harder than usual.


Sometimes connective tissue, including fascia, may influence how movement feels.


Sometimes the nervous system influences how we experience tension.


Sometimes a muscle that feels tight may actually be working from a lengthened position because the muscles on the opposite side of the body (the antagonists) are limiting movement.


Although these situations can feel remarkably similar, they don’t always have the same contributing factors. That’s one reason there isn’t one universal solution for everyone who says,“I always feel tight.”


The Body Doesn’t Think in Individual Muscles

One of the biggest changes in my own thinking as a massage therapist has been learning to see the body less as individual muscles and more as an interconnected system.


Very few movements happen because of one muscle alone. Movement is the result of muscles, fascia, joints, connective tissue, and the nervous system working together. When one area changes how it moves, another area often adapts.


Those adaptations aren’t mistakes. They’re one of the remarkable ways your body helps you continue moving through daily life.


Sometimes, however, those same adaptations may also influence comfort, movement, or the sensation we describe as “tightness.”


Instead of asking,“Which muscle is tight?” I often find it more helpful to ask, “What are you doing when you feel that ‘tightness’?”


Understanding Fascia

Over the last twenty years, fascia has become one of the most talked-about tissues in manual therapy. Sometimes it’s described as “the tissue that wraps around muscles.” While that’s true, it’s also only part of the picture.


Fascia forms a continuous three-dimensional network of connective tissue throughout the body. It surrounds and connects muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels, and organs, contributing to support, movement, force transmission, and sensory awareness.


Researchers continue to study fascia, and we’re still learning about all the roles it plays. What current research suggests is that fascia isn’t simply passive packing material. It’s an active part of the body’s movement system.


Rather than thinking about muscles and fascia as separate structures, I prefer to think of them as partners working together.


More Pressure Isn’t Always Better

When something feels tight, it’s natural to think “I just need deeper pressure.”


Sometimes firmer pressure is appropriate. Sometimes it isn’t.


If the sensation of tightness may be influenced by muscles, fascia, movement habits, the nervous system, or several of these working together, then more pressure isn’t automatically the best answer.


That’s one reason my work tends to be slower and more intentional. I’m not trying to overpower your body. I’m trying to understand how it’s responding.


Every session becomes a conversation rather than a contest.


Curiosity Over Certainty

One of the things I appreciate most about studying the human body is realizing how much there still is to learn.


For many years, healthcare tended to search for one structure to blame for pain or tightness.


Today, researchers increasingly recognize that our experiences are often more complex.


Movement. Load. Recovery. Stress. Sleep. Previous injuries. Muscle activity. Connective tissue. The nervous system.


These can all influence how our bodies feel.

Rather than assuming we already know the answer, I think curiosity serves us better. Curiosity leads to better questions. Better questions often lead to better conversations.

And better conversations help us make more informed decisions about caring for our bodies.


What We Know… and What We’re Still Learning

✔ Your body is highly adaptable.

✔ Muscles, fascia, joints, and the nervous system all contribute to movement.

✔ The sensation of tightness can have many contributing factors.

✔ Individualized care matters because every person’s experience is different.


What we’re still learning

Researchers continue exploring how fascia contributes to movement, how the nervous system influences our perception of tightness, and why people with similar movement patterns can have very different experiences.


The more we learn, the more we appreciate that the body is wonderfully complex.


In the Treatment Room

One of my favorite questions isn’t, “Where does it hurt?” It’s, “What might your body be responding to?” What are you doing when you feel the pain? What helps? What hurts?


Rather than assuming every shoulder needs the same treatment, I begin by listening.


Your work.


Your hobbies.


Your movement.


Your goals.


How your symptoms developed.


How your body responds.


No two people tell exactly the same story.


That’s why no two massage sessions should be exactly the same.


A Thought to Leave With You

The next time your body feels tight…


Pause before assuming something is wrong.


Instead, become curious.


What has your body been adapting to? What demands has it been meeting? What patterns have developed over time?


Understanding those questions doesn’t always provide immediate answers.


But it often leads to better conversations…and better decisions about caring for your body.


Helping your body move with less pain and more ease.


Progress at the pace of peace.


A Note About Fascia

Research on fascia has expanded dramatically over the past two decades, and our understanding continues to evolve. While scientists have learned much about fascia’s role in movement, force transmission, and sensory awareness, researchers are still exploring how fascial tissues contribute to pain, stiffness, and manual therapy outcomes. Throughout The Peaceful Progress Journal, I’ll share what current evidence supports while acknowledging where questions remain.
